Newcastle United will “absolutely not” target a move to sign Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window despite reports to the contrary.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, insisted that the 25-year-old is not viewed as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak and he would be stunned if a deal were to happen.

It was also said that no players are expected to leave Liverpool in the January transfer window as they want to remain competitive across all four competitions.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are walking a fine line with regard to their financial situation and are unlikely to spend big money on incoming deals this month.

Isak has been heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park, which would force the club into the transfer market in search of a replacement.

Robinson, however, has insisted Newcastle will not entertain any talks over the 25-year-old’s departure and are keen to sign a new forward to play alongside him rather than replace him.

This comes amid increasing speculation over the future of Callum Wilson after Football Insider revealed the Magpies are leaning towards letting him leave upon the expiry of his contract.

Newcastle make Darwin Nunez transfer decision after Alexander Isak twist

Newcastle are expected to target a new striker in the summer as they will be left short of numbers in the position, having been linked with a number of forwards in recent weeks.

Robinson has now insisted that there is “no way” the Magpies view Nunez as a replacement for Isak and remain determined to keep him at St James’ Park.

Not in the winter, no, absolutely not in the January window,” he told Football Insider.

“You’re not going to swap Isak with Darwin Nunez when Isak is one of the most in-form strikers in Europe at the moment.

“Newcastle are going to be linked with players, but it’s a fine line for them when you consider their situation with FFP and PSR.

“I can feel the fans’ frustrations when you’re talking about selling your best players and replacing them with lesser players.

“There’s no way they’re going to try and get Nunez from Liverpool to replace Isak.

“Callum Wilson is a problem given his fitness, age and contract situation.

“But Isak is one of the best in Europe at the moment, and they want someone to play alongside him, not to replace him.

“I don’t see Nunez being that player, and I don’t see anybody leaving Liverpool this January.”

In other news, Newcastle plan to sell Miguel Almiron and sign a new winger.
