Mikel Arteta has established Arsenal as genuine title challengers to Manchester City.
The Gunners have run Pep Guardiola’s men close over the last two seasons but came up short on both occasions during the latter stages.
There’s a different feeling this year as the defence looks even more rock solid, with the addition of Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber’s return from injury.
David Raya’s also a year deep into his Arsenal career now looks even more assured between the sticks.
That said, Peter Schmeichel has revealed who he thinks is better out of Raya and Ederson.
Peter Schmeichel says Man City’s Ederson is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League
Speaking on The Overlap YouTube channel, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, who is widely regarded as the greatest Premier League keeper of all time, said Raya is almost as good as Ederson.
"Ederson is the best keeper in the Premier League,” Schmeichel said.
“David Raya is coming close now too. He has really impressed me. Once he got established as Arsenal's number one and that competition situation got out of the way and Aaron Ramsdale left, there was a different aura around him.
“He's played well and has kept his team in a few games. He's made some important saves. He has also eradicated all those mistakes that he made from having to be a good footballer.
"Against Tottenham, he passed the ball straight out to [Cristian] Romero. All those mistakes, I haven't seen this season."
David Raya statistics
Raya’s FBref statistics make for very impressive reading.
The Spaniard ranks in the top one per cent for clean sheets per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe.
Further, Raya sits in the two per cent for crosses stopped, further amplifying what an assured presence he is.
