Liverpool have an incredible squad at their disposal right now, but there are a few additions that may be necessary in the upcoming transfer windows.

Indeed, Liverpool still need a new defensive midfield player, while, speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has called for a new left-back to be signed.

Andy Robertson has been Liverpool's first-choice left-back for a long time, but as Premier League tactics evolve, that traditional left-back role is being phased out.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal no longer play with a traditional left-back, and Carragher believes Liverpool will go in a similar direction.

The pundit says Liverpool need a player like Nathan Ake or potentially even Josko Gvardiol, and he expects the Reds to make this type of signing in the near future.

Jamie Carragher predicts new left-back signing for Liverpool

Carragher spoke about Liverpool signing someone similar to the £41m Man City star.

"I still think they need a left-sided defender. Listen, Robertson has been amazing, but I've said it for a while now, I think we could do with what Man City have got with a Gvardiol or a Nathan Ake, someone of that type, a left-footed defender who can do a bit of left-back and a bit of centre-back. I think that is something that will probably happen," Carragher said.

Liverpool will adapt

Carragher may not be too far wrong here.

Football tactics are constantly evolving, and top teams are moving towards playing inverted defenders down that left side who can double up as either defensive midfielders or central defenders.

Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are the last of an old breed of classic left-backs who solely patrol the flank, but in this new age of inverting full-backs, Liverpool ma need to adapt sooner rather than later.

Don't be surprised if the Reds do end up signing a new left-sided defender in the next transfer window and adjust their tactics slightly.
