3 players Bolton Wanderers could lose if promotion bid fails

Bolton Wanderers are currently eyeing promotion to the Championship from League One.
Bolton Wanderers turned to Steven Schumacher as their replacement for Ian Evatt earlier this winter. Prior to his switch to BWFC, he had spells at Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City.
The Trotters are sat in 7th place in the third tier table with nine fixtures left to play as they look to return to the second tier. They are only a point behind Huddersfield Town in 6th and are in a strong position.
Schumacher’s side were beaten 1-0 at home by Stockport County last time out. They are back in action after the international break with an away trip to Bloomfield Road to take on Blackpool as they look to bounce back from their loss to the Hatters.
In the meantime, we have highlighted three players who could leave if they fail to get promoted to the second tier…
George Thomason
Bolton Wanderers’ skipper turned down a move to Bristol City back in 2023, as per BristolLive. He has been a key player over recent years for his current club and has made 160 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 13 goals and 15 assists.
Thomason, 24, should try and test himself at a higher level if he can. He has already rejected the chance to step up in the past and would have a decision to make if another opportunity came along in the future.
Nathan Baxter
His deal with the Trotters expires at the end of the campaign and he is due to become a free agent in June as things stand. The 26-year-old has played 65 games for the North West club since joining back in 2023.
The goalkeeper was linked with Plymouth Argyle last year, as per journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon, but nothing materialised in the end. Regarding his contract situation, he has said, as per The Bolton News: “I have not been communicated by the club in any way. But to be fair, I think it’s just a case of let’s try and focus on each game as it comes. I do get lots of messages saying, ‘Why didn’t you sign a contract?’ But that hasn’t been the case.”
Eoin Toal
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see other teams show an interest in Toal if Bolton Wanderers don’t go up. The centre-back moved to the ToughSheet Community Stadium back in 2022 from Derry City.
He has since become one of the Trotters’ most prized assets. The defender has played 104 matches and has found the net on 10 occasions.
