Birmingham City could loan out defender Dion Sanderson in the January transfer window, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon.

Sanderson, 24, has fallen out of favour with the Blues this season. He has made only five appearances in all competitions, two of which have come in the league.

In this latest update regarding his situation, journalist Nixon has reported on his Patreon that he has ‘admirers’ from the second tier.

Birmingham City are sat in 2nd place in the table behind Wycombe Wanderers by two points but have a game in-hand. They drew 1-1 at home to Northampton Town last time out and are back in action next weekend with an away trip to Shrewsbury Town as they look to return to winning ways.

Offloading Sanderson would suit all parties involved.

He has slipped down the pecking order at Birmingham City and struggles to get into their team ahead of Christoph Klarer, Ben Davies and Krystian Bielik.

The defender is under contract until the summer of 2027 but his future is up in the air.

Selling Sanderson would help free up space and funds in the Blues’ ranks to pave the way for new arrivals.

The Wolverhampton-born man joined his current club back in 2022 but struggled for form in the last campaign as they ended up going down. They finished in the bottom three along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

He initially joined the Midlands outfit on loan before his switch was later made permanent.

Sanderson has made 78 appearances for Birmingham City altogether to date and has found the net on four occasions from the back.

A change of scene would do him good ahead of the second-half of this term.

He rose up through the academy ranks at Wolves and played for the Premier League side at various different youth levels before going on to play once for their first-team. They loaned him out as a youngster to Cardiff CitySunderland and QPR to get some experience before the Blues came calling.

What now?

It remains to be see which particular clubs are interested in Sanderson.

In the meantime, he will be looking to break into Birmingham City’s side over the coming weeks.
