Bolton Wanderers defender chased by top tier clubs
Yesterday at 03:43 AM
Bolton Wanderers defender Gethin Jones is on the radar of some A-League clubs ahead of a potential summer switch, as per Alan Nixon.
Bolton Wanderers sit just outside the top six in League One, but without reinforcements this month it could be difficult for BWFC to climb inside the play-offs this time around.
Ian Evatt’s side have been inconsistent this season and have failed to recreate the form which saw them finish 3rd in the table last season.
The club may go through a bit of a transition period between now and next season and one man who could leave is Jones.
Jones, 29, has featured in just eight League One games so far this season. He has been in the team more regularly as of late, however with his contract entering the final six months it seems unlikely he will stay beyond the summer.
Nixon reports that there are several A-League clubs chasing a deal for Jones in the summer. The natural right-back has six caps for Australia and a move back to his home country may be tempting for him at this stage of his career.
The end of an era
Jones has been with the club since 2020 and in that time has played 172 games for the Wanderers.
He played 34 third tier games last season for Evatt’s side as they reached the play-off final, however he just hasn’t managed to get going this time around.
A move appears best for both parties and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jones utilised by Bolton Wanderers between now and the end of the campaign.
Jones came through the ranks at Everton before earning a move to Fleetwood in 2018. He is yet to play in a top tier during his career and the chance to do so back in Australia will unsurprisingly be tempting for the experienced full back.
Looking forward
Bolton Wanderers drew 2-2 with Cambridge United yesterday.
Evatt’s side will see that as a big two dropped points against the side who sit second bottom in League One.
Bolton Wanderers relied on a 90th minute own goal to rescue a point and as things stand momentum is against them with the mood at the club turning sour.
They will now be gearing up for a midweek clash against Charlton Athletic in what is a big game for both clubs. A win for Bolton Wanderers could see them climb level with the top six, but a win for the Addicks would see them get to within one point of Evatt’s side.
