Bolton Wanderers are close to signing Newcastle United defender Alex Murphy on loan, according to a report by The Bolton News.
Bolton Wanderers are poised to land the youngster on a temporary basis. BWFC have until the end of the January transfer window to complete any incoming or outgoing bits of business.
Murphy, 20, has been on the books at Newcastle United since joining them as a teenager in 2022. He is under contract with the Premier League side until the summer of 2027 and can play as either a left-back or centre-back.
In this latest update regarding his immediate future, The Bolton News report he is on the ‘verge’ of a switch to the Trotters this winter. Ian Evatt’s side are currently sat in 9th place in the League One table.
They drew 2-2 at home to Cambridge United this past weekend and are positioned three points off the play-offs.
Bolton Wanderers to land Alex Murphy from Newcastle United
Bolton Wanderers could see Murphy as someone to boost their defensive ranks as they eye a place in the top six.
He is a key player for Newcastle United’s Under-21’s at the moment and will be eager to show what he can do in the Football League.
The prospect said earlier this winter, as per the Shields Gazette: “I want to play as many senior minutes as I can, whether that is here or somewhere else for the year. I want to get as many games under my belt as possible and then, hopefully, the aim is to play here [at Newcastle] every week.
“I want to show what I can do in men’s football and I feel I am at that stage to do that. A year or two ago, I wanted the same thing but I then got called up into Newcastle’s first team and you didn’t care about that because you were getting that experience here and training with the squad.
“I’m at the point where I need to go out and play every week, showing what I can do, but we’ll see what happens.”
Murphy played for Corrib Celtic before linking up with Galway United in 2019.
He then broke into the first-team of the League of Ireland club and played 32 matches, chipping in with two goals and four assists.
The Republic of Ireland youth international has made two senior appearances for Newcastle United so far.
What now for Bolton Wanderers-bound Alex Murphy?
He will give Evatt another option to pick from at the back, assuming the deal gets over the line.
Bolton Wanderers need to find some more consistency as they look to get promoted.
They lost in the play-off final last year to Oxford United at Wembley.
