'We're looking' – EFL boss coy on links to Birmingham City man

Carlisle United boss Mike Williamson has refused to be drawn on links to Birmingham City full-back Josh Williams.
Birmingham City’s defender is said to be on Carlisle United’s radar this winter, as per journalist Dan Marsh on X. He is currently out on loan from BCFC at Gateshead until the end of this month.
Williams, 22, linked up with the National League side on a temporary basis in November to get some experience. He has since made nine appearances.
When asked whether he was a player of interest to the Cumbrians, Williamson said, as per a report by The News & Star: “I wouldn’t want to comment on any other players. We’re looking for a wing back.”
He added: “I think the majority of our business is done. There are players that we’re still looking at wanting to try and get in this week that Rob [Clarkson, sporting director] is working on, but the possibility is always open.
“We’re open-minded to it. We feel as though our business that we’ve done has been very good. Our focus now is just to make it gel as quick as possible.”
Birmingham City man linked with Carlisle United
Loaning Williams to Carlisle United would be a sensible move by Birmingham City.
It would be the next natural step up from his time at Gateshead in the fifth tier.
After joining his current club earlier this winter, he told their website: “I’m delighted to be here to be honest. I’m grateful for the opportunity the gaffer has given me, and I’m just going to go out and there and play my best for the team. I’m just excited to get out there and show everyone what I can do.”
His chances of breaking into the Blues’ starting XI right now are slim.
Williams has made only one appearance so far this season for the Blues but has trained regularly with their first-team.
His contract expires in 2026 meaning he still has another couple of years to break into Chris Davies’ team.
Williams has been on the books at Birmingham City for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy.
The wing-back was a regular at various different youth levels and has played 10 games to date for the first-team.
He was loaned out to Cheltenham Town last term and made nine outings for the Robins in the third tier.
What now for Birmingham City’s Josh Williams?
Carlisle United’s manager Williamson was giving nothing away when asked about Williams.
Birmingham City have a decision to make on what to do with the player with his deal at Gateshead due to expire soon.
