Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has labelled Dan Kanu as ‘wonderful’ following his weekend performance.
Charlton Athletic beat big-spending Birmingham City 1-0 at The Valley on Saturday afternoon. Striker Matt Godden scored their winner early in the second-half.
Kanu, 19, started the game for the Addicks. He has made seven appearances so far this season, six of which have come in League One.
Jones has been impressed and has said, as per a report by London News Online: “If you have seen this kid play – he is 19 and came through the academy,” said Jones. “That is what we have – TC (Tyreece Campbell) and Karoy Anderson. These are young kids that have come through the academy, who are fearless and truly outstanding. Zach Mitchell was really close to being involved today and even starting.
“That’s what we have got. We are different to Birmingham – they spent £15-20million on their strikers. We’ve got Daniel Kanu. He has missed a chance today. I could’ve headlocked him at the time, but he is such a great kid. His work-rate and what he does – truly, truly wonderful. And he’s still learning because he is 19 years of age.“
Charlton Athletic man hailed
Kanu joined Charlton Athletic back in 2014 and has since risen up through their academy.
He has been a regular for the Addicks at various different youth levels and was handed his first professional deal back in 2022.
The teenager made his first-team debut in the same year against Wigan Athletic.
Kanu hasn’t looked back since and has since played 58 times for Charlton Athletic, finding the net on eight occasions.
He was loaned out to Southend United in the National League during the last campaign to get some more experience under his belt and scored four goals in six games during his time at Roots Hall.
The Londoner has a bright future ahead of him in the game and is someone who the Addicks will want to keep hold of for as long as possible. His deal expires in 2027.
What now?
Charlton Athletic are sat in 8th place in the table.
They are only outside the play-offs on goal difference behind Stockport County.
