Hull City parted ways with Greg Docherty at the end of last season after deciding against keeping hold of him.

Hull City opted not to extend the midfielder’s stay at the MKM Stadium and he subsequently became a free agent in late June.

He wasn’t the only player to leave the Championship side either and they also released the likes of Adama Traore, Aaron Connolly and Cyrus Christie, among others, to free up space and funds in their ranks.

Docherty, 28, weighed up his options as a free agent over the summer. He was linked with Blackburn Rovers, as per a report by the Daily Record, as well as Legia Warsaw and Rapid Bucharest, according to The Sun.

However, he ended up dropping down into League One to join Charlton Athletic on a free transfer under Nathan Jones. He penned a three-year deal at The Valley, with the option of a further 12 months on top of that.

New chapter at Charlton Athletic

Docherty has made a positive impression since his switch down to London and has been a regular.

He is getting plenty of game time under his belt with the Addicks which is what he was after.

The Scotsman has played 11 games in all competitions so far in this campaign, 10 of which have come in the league, and he has scored one goal.

Charlton Athletic also named Docherty as their captain ahead of this term as they look to get promoted to the second tier. He was also given the number 10 shirt.

He started for them in the middle of the park as they beat big-spending Birmingham City 1-0 last time out.

The Addicks are 8th in the league but are only outside the play-offs on goal difference behind Stockport County.

Hull City days

Docherty was a good servant to Hull City during his time with them.

The former Hamilton Academical and Rangers man joined the Tigers in 2020.

He helped them win promotion to the Championship in his first year and made 142 appearances altogether, chipping in with seven goals.

It felt the right time for him to leave though this past summer after his minutes dried up and he seems to have found an ideal home at Charlton Athletic.
