Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has insisted he did not bite Birmingham City’s Alex Cochrane in the 3-1 loss to the Blues on Monday night.

Wrexham went into their trip to Birmingham City hopeful of maintaining their unbeaten start to the 2024/25 campaign.

The Red Dragons have taken to life in League One brilliantly, winning four and drawing once before the Monday night tie. However, their unbeaten run would end at St. Andrew’s as the Blues emerged 3-1 winners over Phil Parkinson’s side.

The visitors took the led early on as Jack Marriott scored once again, but the hosts drew level through Jay Stansfield around halfway through the first period. The big-money Birmingham City striker would fire his side ahead shortly after the restart with a fine Tomoki Iwata strike making it 3-1.

Despite Iwata’s strike being the last of the goals, there was still drama to be had. Krystian Bielik was sent off late on, Wrexham man James McClean had a back and forth with the home fans, but perhaps most notably, striker Paul Mullin had an altercation with defender Alex Cochrane.

In a tussle on the ground, the Liverpool-born talisman put his mouth to the calf of Cochrane in a biting motion, but closer angles displayed he only went to bite him, rather than actually sinking his teeth in.

Post-game, Mullin issued his response to the matter, stressing he did not bite the Birmingham City man before joking that Cochrane’s leg ‘was thinking about attacking his mouth’.

Mullin was among the handful of players booked late on amid high tensions at St. Andrew’s.
