Peterborough United are closing in on a deal to sign Altrincham man Chris Conn-Clarke, as per Alan Nixon.

Peterborough United are gearing up for another season in League One.

Posh finished inside the top six in the third tier last season. However, Darren Ferguson’s side lost to the eventual winners Oxford United in the semi final of the play-offs.

Now, their summer will be more preparation in hope of another top six push next time around.

Conn-Clarke, 22, played 47 games for Altrincham last season. He scored 22 goals in his best campaign yet in senior football.

Portsmouth had interest in the attacking midfielder, but cooled that and pursued other options.

Now, it seems like Peterborough United are close to striking a deal for the National League starlet. Nixon claims a fee of around £350,000 is what Posh are paying.

Who is this?

Taking the opportunity

Ferguson has plenty of experience at Posh and at this level.

Peterborough United have had a recent taste of Championship football, but having just finished in the top six the expectation will be for them to be in the promotion race again next season.

League One is always a competitive division. However, Portsmouth and Derby County both getting promoted does open the door for the likes of Posh. However, Birmingham City, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town will be keen to make their stay in the third tier a short one.

A big step up

Conn-Clarke hasn’t played above National League level and whilst his campaign last season was nothing short of impressive, stepping up two divisions and moving to a side with high expectations will be tough.

The 22-year-old has a lot of time and room to grow and develop. Ferguson will have to manage him well, but if he manages to find the right balance then Posh could have an incredible talent on their hands.

The transfer window only officially opened last Friday, but Posh are already making positive moves as they look to bridge the gap up to the Championship.

There’s still a long way to go this summer, but Ferguson will be hoping his side get his business done early and they can then focus on preparing their squad for the draining season that lies ahead.
