Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has said Neill Byrne should be ‘fine’ to play this weekend.

Byrne, 31, missed their trip to Prenton Park last week against Tranmere Rovers due to illness.

In this latest update, Alexander has said, as per a report by The Yorkshire Post: “We’re fluctuating at the moment because this illness has been going through the squad a little bit. We’ve had a couple of lads miss yesterday and a couple of different ones. We lost Byrner last Saturday from it and three or four since then.

“We have to train and be together but we try to limit the time this week to give everyone the best chance of staying fit. Byrner was a bit ropey when he trained (on Tuesday) because he was lacking energy. But he’s had a full training session on Wednesday.

“I spoke to him afterwards and he said he feels miles better. With another 72 hours before the game (Wednesday), I think he’ll be fine for selection. But it’s the other guys who have got it now. With Byrner, it was 24 hours feeling sick and then just replenishing his energy levels.”

Bradford City selection boost

Having Byrne back will be a boost to Bradford City.

He gives them more experience at the back and provides Alexander with another option to pick from.

The Irishman joined the Bantams over the summer from Stockport County to add more competition and depth to their rank.

Byrne has since made nine appearances in all competitions for the Yorkshire outfit and has slotted in nicely into their team.

He helped the Hatters gain promotion to League One in the last campaign and will be hoping to do the same again with his new team.

The ex-Republic of Ireland youth international has played over 450 games in his career to date and has had spells in the past at Barrow, Hartlepool United and Tranmere Rovers.

What now?

Bradford City will see how he is over the next couple of days as they prepare to face Gillingham.

The Bantams won 2-0 away at Tranmere Rovers last time out.

They are 7th in the table and are above 8th place Grimsby Town on goal difference.
