Liverpool and Manchester United were involved in a thrilling game of football at Anfield as they played out a 2-2 draw in the Premier League.

The Red Devils were given no chance before the game but showed that they were more than up for the challenge with a spirited showing against the league leaders.

Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah cancelled out Lisandro Martinez’s opener, but Amad Diallo scored against Liverpool once again to ensure the spoils were shared.

Several players came under the limelight, but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance came under increased scrutiny, especially after his ongoing transfer saga involving Real Madrid.

And Chris Sutton has jumped to the defence of the Liverpool right-back after his performance against Manchester United.

Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants making an official offer to secure his services in the January transfer window.

Liverpool swiftly turned down the approach and remain locked in talks to tie him down to a long-term deal, although his future very much hangs in the balance.

Amid all the talk about his future, it’s safe to say he didn’t enjoy his best night for the club as Manchester United targeted him and got a lot of joy down his flank.

While Roy Keane delivered a brutal verdict on Alexander-Arnold’s performance – suggesting that he should play for Tranmere Rovers and not Real Madrid – Sutton had a different opinion.

“Where has this pile-on for Trent [Alexander-Arnold] come from?” quipped Sutton via BBC.

“Trent has been brilliant in a Liverpool jersey and all of a sudden, you want him out the door. Blimey.”

Alexander-Arnold did struggle vs Man United

As we mentioned earlier, it wasn’t Trent’s best performance of the season as Manchester United got a lot of joy on their left side of the pitch.

He struggled to get to grips with Diogo Dalot and failed to cover his tracks for Martinez’s opener, while it could also be argued that he played a part in Diallo’s equaliser as Alejandro Garnacho was allowed to get a cross into the box from the left flank with ease.

Nevertheless, Sutton is right in claiming that Alexander-Arnold has been brilliant defensively this season, so fans and pundits alike should be a bit more measured with their criticism of the Liverpool international.
