Liverpool supporters hoping for a Christmas present from their club were left disappointed on Wednesday.

In some corners of the fanbase, there had been a feeling that the Reds were waiting to deliver a contract extension on the big day.

With Virgil van Dijk having famously posed in front of a Christmas tree upon signing for the Reds in 2017, it was felt that the Dutchman may be the most likely candidate to repeat the trick.

However, with Christmas Day having been and gone at Anfield, there was no sign to suggest that anything is quite so imminent.

That now means that Van Dijk’s contract situation – as well as that of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – is now likely to rumble into 2025.

However, Van Dijk still feels likely to sign, and if he does, former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has made a prediction about about what will happen.

Jordan Henderson predicts Virgil van Dijk excellence

Van Dijk has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season. On current form – and past form obviously as well – there’s no way the 33-year-old should be leaving the Reds.

33 is a significant age as it is also the point at which Henderson left Liverpool in 2023.

The midfielder’s situation was markedly different, of course. He was still under contract until 2025 himself but looked to be on the wane from the player he once was.

Plainly, Van Dijk is a different kettle of fish. And speaking to Amazon Prime Spot about his former teammate, Henderson was asked what priority Liverpool should give handing their captain a new deal.

“Top,” smiled the former No.14. “I feel like Virgil could play until 39, 40 if he wanted to.

“So, for me if they give him a contract for two, three, four years it would be a pretty good bit of business for the club.”

How did Van Dijk respond?

Amazon spliced together different responses from Henderson and Van Dijk to make this an interesting watch for Liverpool fans.

It’s unclear whether Virgil was told of Henderson’s response before giving his, but on the back of the now Ajax man proclaiming him to be set to play until 40, the Reds No.4 did not disagree.

“Yeah, I could play definitely in my opinion as well for another three or four years at least on the highest level,” he answered.

“So, we’ll see what the future brings.”

Delivered with a smile, it feels as though Van Dijk is expecting his Anfield stay to continue into the future. But until anything is signed and sealed, the worry that he’ll fulfil Henderson’s prediction elsewhere will remain.
