Remarkable Caoimhin Kelleher stat comes to light as Liverpool stopper endures nightmare night against England
Yesterday at 03:30 PM
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher had a night to forget at Wembley as England hammered the Republic of Ireland 5-0.
A brutal second half from the Three Lions left Kelleher helpless in the Ireland net, although the Liverpool man will be disappointed with his role in a couple.
Of course, Kelleher has been outstanding for Liverpool and Ireland recently and Kelleher was indeed praised for his role against Finland last week.
Furthermore, Kelleher has even been backed to stay in the sticks once Alisson is back, such has been his impact at Anfield this season.
Quite whether Alisson gets the nod on his return, remains to be seen but on a nightmare night for Kelleher with Ireland, he can at least look to his Liverpool form with some pride.
Indeed, the stats show that he’s every right to be proud and that really, the five conceded against England are a bit of an anomaly for the stopper.
Caoimhin Kelleher concedes more goals in 26 minutes than he has done all season for Liverpool
Quite remarkably, in Kelleher’s five Premier League appearances this season, he’s only conceded four goals and two of those came in the draw with Arsenal.
Unbelievably, then, it means Kelleher has kept the ball out of the net more times over the entire season with Liverpool so far than he managed to do in just 26 minutes against England.
Harry Kane’s penalty opened the floodgates in the 53rd minute before Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored on his debut to round things off in the 79th.
For Kelleher, the glut of goals flying past him will have felt surreal, given what he’s used to at Anfield.
Kelleher deserves better at International level
Unfortunately for Kelleher, who is very much a top goalkeeper, he’s playing for a country that historically, find themselves on the end of the odd beating.
Sure, Ireland are usually competitive in the main and can pull big results out of the bag.
But his defence in front of him tonight was a far cry from having Ibou Konate and Virgil van Dijk marshalling proceedings and it showed.
Kelleher, then, will be glad to get back to the daily grind of Premier League football and quickly forget about this one.
