Report: Surprise front-runner emerges as Liverpool legend makes ambitious move to sign Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah has made headlines on and off the pitch for Liverpool this season.
The Egyptian is playing arguably the best football of his Anfield career under Arne Slot and his numbers have been outrageous this season even by his lofty standards.
Off the pitch, Salah’s contract standoff with Liverpool is approaching its climax, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
The speculation surrounding his future isn’t affecting his form, but if reports are to be believed, sources close to Liverpool believe he could join forces with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.
Al-Ettifaq favourites to sign Mohamed Salah from Liverpool
Salah last signed a contract extension in 2022 to become the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Since then, he has shown no signs of slowing down and has aged like fine wine despite being well into his 30s, which is a sign that he has a lot left in his tank.
Liverpool have offered Salah a new contract, but the two parties are no closer to coming to an agreement, with the Egyptian claiming several times over the past few months that this could well be his last season at Anfield.
And now, Caught Offside state that Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq are favourites to sign Salah on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal also among the Saudi Pro League clubs monitoring his situation.
Ettifaq have been described as a ‘major player’ in any deal for Salah due to Gerrard’s Liverpool connection, although these transfer links are only likely to irk the Anfield faithful.
The report also states that the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Miami, Al Nassr and Zamalek are keeping a watchful eye on his situation as his contract winds down.
Liverpool still in talks to keep Salah
Salah is still one of the best players in the world and Liverpool can’t afford to lose a player like him, especially on a free transfer.
Additionally, Gerrard is going through a tumultuous time at Ettifaq, with his side sitting just three points above the relegation zone.
Salah is too good to play in Saudi Arabia currently, but even if he were to move there, it is likely to happen at a later point in his career to one of the bigger sides like Al Hilal or Al Ittihad.
That said, Liverpool are running out of time to tie him down to a new deal and need to reach an agreement with him in the coming weeks to avoid the saga from spilling into the business end of the campaign.
