Cambridge United Fans Verdict: Three Goals, Three Points
12/05/2024 04:55 AM
How the fans reacted to another comfortable win at the SCL Stadium.
I write these fans verdicts the day after said game. So as you may expect, my mind has moved on slightly from Tuesday's match. As good as it was, and as comfortable as we made it look, there are bigger things - or a bigger thing to be specific - for us to focus on right now.
However, I'm going to try and do my best to lift the mood a little by reliving Tuesday's win. Because, believe it or not, back then - yes, not even 48 hours ago - we were a much happier bunch.
Here's how the fans reacted to the win...
Lewis Wing
It's been suggested, and not outlandishly so, that if Selles does end up leaving (and I've just read a tweet from TalkSport's Alex Crook stating that is looking more and more likely) then some key players will more than likely end up following him out the door.
If Lewis Wing ends up being one of the players you may as well just fold the club. We haven't had a player produce the kind of moments he has on such a regular basis in donkeys years.
Two more Wing Specials were served up on Tuesday, with the latter being particularly spicy...
Lewis Wing is an absolute joke. He's going up next year. Just hopefully it's with us #readingfc

Honestly though, who is putting up the catalogue of goals that Lewis Wing has for us. He's an actual cheat code #readingfc

Lewis Wing been eating his spaghetti again #ReadingFC

Lewis Wing is a far to good for us #readingfcpic.twitter.com/0Wl6mAE6kA

We've all lived through a painful existence the last few years supporting #ReadingFC. Even so, I can't remember a player I've enjoyed watching as much as Lewis Wing. Dictates play, works his arse off every game and has the best goal catalogue I can remember of any player.

Lewis Wing the man that you are#ReadingFCpic.twitter.com/RyHHTxXxbC
— Connor | RFC (@connorr333) December 4, 2024
Genuine @ReadingFC question. In my 40+ years watching, I can't think of any player who has scored as many great goals as Lewis Wing in his 1.5 seasons. Caskey, Harte with a few great free kicks but don't remember many from open play. Throw some names at me.. #readingfc

Babe wake up. Lewis wing just scored another screamer #readingfc
— Ellis (@Ellis5076281381) December 3, 2024
One day teams might have a go at stopping Wing shooting from range it is actually ridiculous how many he scores from outside the box #readingfc
— Jon (@BeardyMoomin) December 3, 2024
Lewis Wing belter. Rinse and repeat. He's actually just ridiculous #readingfc

A comfortable win
What we needed after Sunday's FA Cup tie, not just for the legs of the players but also the heart rates of the fans, was a nice, simple, easy win that didn't take too much out of us. And that's exactly what we got.
Cambridge look like they're in a bit of trouble and struggled to lay a glove on us at all, but we did our job astutely in that second half - being clinical in front of goal and seeing out the rest of the game in a calm manner.
Home wins are becoming a regular occurrence, but they never lose their sweetness for the fans...
Easiest win I've ever watched #readingfchttps://t.co/v7lG76nC9Tpic.twitter.com/u1z3FF9wnx

A very comfortable win in the end, controlled the game completely and in the 2nd half managed to be clinical with our chances. Wing and Elliot were our stand out performers I think, both fantastic in the middle of the park #readingfc

Selles' departure
Even after all of that, you're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?
I genuinely feel like I've been punched in the gut. We really just can't have nice things can we?
I could do an entire fans verdict piece on this news. It is the hammer blows of all hammer blows, and will undoubtedly be the final nail in the coffin for any optimism most of the fanbase had.
It's not confirmed yet but the writing looks like it's already on the wall, and the fans can't do anything to scrub it off...
Praying beyond words Selles rejects hull. I wouldn't blame him for going but I'd be gutted. he's the best manager we've had in years . Everyone loves him.

How many people leave us and actually go on to better careers.
Please stick at it Ruben. You're the glue! #ReadingFC
If the rumours are true about Selles leaving then that's sad, the players clearly enjoy playing for him and fans love him #ReadingFC
— George Blar (@GeorgeB22998154) December 4, 2024
Let's be absolutely clear, if Selles does leave, and really you couldn't blame him one bit of he did, we are well and truly fucked. Goes down as a club legend for whenever he does move on #readingfc
— Tom Maynard (@ttmaynard) December 4, 2024
selles going is so sad :( what a guy, he deserves a bigger job with a stable owner. can't blame him at all. have no clue who would want to come in and try sort this mess out #ReadingFC
— jord (@jordyshep19) December 4, 2024
Selles said at the end of last season that he couldn't carry on with the ownership situation like it was. It's arguably gotten worse this season. It's literally a miracle that it's taken this long for him to have his head turned anyway. #ReadingFC
— Tatum (@Tatum1871) December 4, 2024
16 become 18, The club has been and will continue to be asset stripped and it look like we will lose the glue that's holding this team together. Selles has worked miracles with this young thread bare squad that keep getting punished off the field. Good luck Ruben #ReadingFChttps://t.co/hKCSb2Frql

Conclusion
I'm not really sure how to sum my feelings or thoughts up right now. Tuesday's win has paled into complete insignificance. I'm not sure what happens now, or where we go.
It's anger, it's sadness, it's frustration, it's dejection. It's all the bad feelings rolled into one. It's just a the twist of the knife when there was a tiny bit of hope that it would be pulled out and the wound healed.
Sell. This. God. Damned. Club.
