Jonathan Lawson believes it was important for the Under-21s to show a reaction after the dominant 7-0 victory over Colchester United.

The win was the side’s first in six matches after losing the previous five, marking a return to form in emphatic style for the Young Hornets.

After scoring a brace, the forward told watfordfc.com: “It is a good response to our last few games.

“We have had a bit of a losing streak, so to beat Colchester 7-0, it is a statement that we are back now.

“It will definitely lift the team’s morale.

“Hopefully we can use it to start a little win streak, or a good performance streak, and make up for the last few games that we didn’t play too well in.

“We knew we needed a response so we got together and put out that performance.

“It should be good for the team.”

Lawson’s two goals came in an excellent first-half performance which saw Watford six goals to the good at the break, with the 19-year-old full of praise for the way the team were set-up.

“It is good because there are a lot of crosses coming in,” he added. “That is a good chance for the nines to get into the box and score.

“Also, when the tens go on the half-turn you can make the runs in behind and get the ball.

“It gives us a lot of opportunities to score, so it is good for me.

“They have been telling me to get into the box as sometimes I stay a little bit too far out.

“For my second, I just made sure I made a darting run in and Jake [Watkiss] just found me, and I just got a foot on it, and poked it in.”
