CAFCL: Sundowns, Mazembe & Pirates grab away victories

Former winners of the CAF Champions League showed their pedigree by securing away victories in the competition on Saturday.

A brace by Lucas Ribeiro Costa and goals from debutant Iqraam Rayners and Mosa Lebusa earned Mamelodi Sundowns a 4-0 win over Eswatini’s Mbabane Swallows in Pretoria.

The South African champions’ local rivals, Orlando Pirates also emerged victorious in Gaborone as they claimed a 2-0 victory over Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy who eliminated them from last’s competition.

In Ndola, TP Mazembe proved too good for Zambian champions Red Arrows as two goals from Oscar Tshikomb and Mercey Ngimbi propelled the DR Congolese giants to a 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Tanzanian football heavyweights Young Africans needed a 45th-minute goal from Prince Dube to secure a 1-0 win over Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Sports Association (CBE SA) in Addis Ababa.

While Fiston Mayele’s late goal ensured that Egyptian side Pyramids held Rwandan champions APR to a 1-1 draw in Kigali after Mohamed Chibi had netted an own-goal.

The second-leg matches will be played on the weekend of 20-22 September with the winners on either aggregate or penalties will progress to the group stage.
