Leaburn, 20, has recently returned following a long-term injury and has made five appearances in all competitions so far this season, finding the net twice against Chelsea Under-21’s in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Jones has shared this update on his situation, as per a report by London News Online: “We are endeavouring to offer Miles a longer contract. What we have done is just taken that up to give us some breathing space. But we have offered Miles a new contract.

“We want him to be here long, long-term. Miles has just come back from an injury, so we wanted to do it early to give him a little bit of clarification about what we think of him and how important we see him.

“We have to be very careful with him, to bring him back at the right time and right length of minutes so he can keep moving forward. Then you have got to remember he has only just turned 20, he has a lot of learning to do. You could see that with the goals he scored in midweek, those are the things we’re working with him for.”

Charlton Athletic have eradicated the risk of losing Leaburn for nothing next year by taking up his 12 month option which is a boost.

His focus over recent times has been on his road to recovery and he will now look to hit the ground running in this campaign.

The player’s long-term future is up in the air though and tying him down for longer would be shrewf business by the Addicks.

Leaburn was on the books at Chelsea before switching to Charlton Athletic in 2019.

He has since broken into the first-team of the League One outfit and has played 63 matches for them altogether to date, finding the net on 22 occasions.

What now?

Time will tell whether Jones’ side are able to agree terms over a longer deal.

In the meantime, they are preparing for their FA Cup away trip to Southend United this weekend.
