Wrexham will be waiting until Jack Marriott is fit again before making over a decision his future, The Wrexham Insider has claimed.
Wrexham are looking to push for yet another promotion after starting the 2024/25 campaign strongly.
The Red Dragons might not have been expected to fight it out at the top end of the League One table early on but 13 games into the campaign, Phil Parkinson’s side sit 3rd. They had been one place higher but Wycombe Wanderers have jump above them.
Key to their early success has been striker Jack Marriott, who managed five goals in 10 League One outings before injury struck. The in-form ace went to strike a ball in training and after his foot went from beneath him, he broke his leg.
The long-term injury while in the last year of his Wrexham deal has risen questions over his future, with many calling for him to be tied down to fresh terms as a show of faith and support.
However, the club don’t align with that stance it seems. The Wrexham Insider reports the North Welsh outfit will not make a decision over Marriott’s future until he comes back from injury.
A ruthless position
Some will argue it’s a harsh stance for Wrexham to take given that Marriott finds himself in a really tough position after an innocuous training injury.
Many clubs back those with long-term blows by tying them down to new contracts. It’s a show of faith that the player remains an asset despite their injury and can go a long way with both the player and supporters.
However, it seems there’s no room for such sentiment here. The Red Dragons are planning for a big future and it remains to be seen whether Marriott figures in their vision, despite his key role in their strong start.
In his absence
With current top scorer Marriott out long-term, it seems as though Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer are going to be the preferred Wrexham striker partnership for the foreseeable.
Mo Faal will provide cover and competition, as will free agent signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
Steven Fletcher is sidelined with an injury of his own but the addition of the former Bolton Wanderers and Iceland striker Bodvarsson means there is still enough depth at the top of the pitch for Parkinson.
