Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough has said Calum Macdonald, Tom Nichols and George Williams could move on next month.

The Stags have the chance to do some incoming and outgoing business in the upcoming January transfer window.

Clough has said, as per a report by The Chad: “Calum’s future here will just depend on numbers. The only reason he is out is purely numbers. If we had had the space without doubt he would be in the squad, but we are quite strong down the left hand side so unfortunately he is the odd one out.

“But that could change depending on who goes in January. He could well come back into it. I think we will see players going out. Tom Nichols needs to go out and play. He is too good to be sitting around kicking his heels.

“George Williams never lets us down but we are strong defensively and he might want to go and play regular football. We will be having those sorts of conversations over the next few weeks.”

Mansfield Town exits on the cards

Mansfield Town signed MacDonald back in 2023 but he has seen his game time dry up this season.

The left-back has made only four appearances in all competitions, one of which has come in the league.

Prior to his move to Field Mill, he had spells with the likes of Derby County, Blackpool, Tranmere Rovers, Stockport County and Bristol Rovers.

The Stags snapped up Tom Nichols in February to boost their striking department.

However, the former Exeter City, Crawley Town and Gillingham man hasn’t scored in eight matches this term.

As for Williams, the 31-year-old defender has featured on only three occasions since Clough’s side were promoted from League Two.

He has been on the books at Barnsley, MK Dons and Cambridge United previously and could do with getting more opportunities somewhere else.

What now?

Cutting ties with MacDonald, Nichols and Williams would help free up space and funds for Mansfield Town.

The trio are out of favour and although they provide depth, letting them go would pave the way for new arrivals.

The Stags are sat in 10th place in the table after their first 17 fixtures and they are seven off the play-offs.

They are back in action this weekend away at Charlton Athletic.
