Millwall are eyeing Wycombe Wanderers’ Matt Bloomfield as their top managerial target but Ryan Lowe is also under consideration, as per Alan Nixon.

Millwall are officially managerless after Neil Harris oversaw his last game in charge of the Lions on Saturday afternoon.

The club legend didn’t get the fitting ending he sought, but he was serenaded by the travelling fans post-game regardless. The South London outfit were narrowly beaten by Middlesbrough, with Emmanuel Latte Lath’s early goal proving decisive.

It’s been a respectable campaign to date for Millwall but having seen their form fall away over recent weeks, they’ll now be hoping the next boss at The Den can get the club back on track.

Plenty of names have been linked with the vacant post in South London and now, two new contenders have emerged.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon states that Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield is at the top of the shortlist for the managerless Lions. His work with the Chairboys has seen him linked with a number of roles, this one being the latest.

However, it seems the club are keeping options open. Other contenders are being sounded out and among the out-of-work bosses Millwall are eyeing is Ryan Lowe.

He and some other potential targets would be easier to land than Bloomfield given the compensation needed to land the latter.

Comparing the contenders

It’s no wonder Bloomfield is on the Millwall radar given his success at Adams Park. Following a steady campaign last time around, there was some quiet optimism among Wycombe supporters, but few expected what they have seen this season.

Lowe is a different option, yet he’s another solid contender. He has the Championship experience the Lions may favour having most recently worked as Preston North End boss before his surprise exit.

He has worked his way up the ladder after stints with Bury and Plymouth Argyle caught the eye and it seems highly likely that Lowe will get another shot in the Championship when the time comes for him to return to the dugout.

The task ahead

Despite their poor form, Millwall remain in a solid enough position. They’re 13th in the Championship table, nine points off the play-offs and eight clear of the drop.

However, this appointment is key in dictating where the Lions’ campaign goes from here.

A lot of the success Harris has found has been on the foundation of an unwavering link with the fans. There’s been moments of tension, but he’s always remained a legend at The Den and his attitude has maintained that relationship, helping his side get through some tough times.

The next boss will be out to replicate that to keep the ship steady, though that will be easier said than done.
