Williams, 19, will now spend the rest of the season with Cheltenham Town. They are sat in 13th place in the table and are nine points off the play-offs.

He has told their website: “I’m really proud. I really enjoyed my first day here and now I can’t wait to start playing games and get minutes under my belt.

“I always look to offer goals, assists and hard work. That fits the Club’s repertoire as the manager has alluded to me so hopefully I can do that. Personally I’m really looking forward to the experience.”

Their boss Michael Flynn added: “Ethan is a very talented player and he comes here now to add that bit of quality in the final third. There was a lot of interest in him so I’m really glad that we got it over the line.”

They were relegated from the third tier last year after finishing in the bottom four along with Port Vale, Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town.

The Robins turned to former Newport County and Walsall manager Flynn last summer after Darrell Clarke left for Barnsley.

Williams was on the books at Rochdale before linking up with Manchester United.

He has since risen up through the Red Devils’ academy ranks and has been a regular for them at various different youth levels.

The prospect has more recently been a key man for their Under-21’s side.

Williams will be eager to get as / much game time as possible now at Cheltenham Town.

What now for Cheltenham Town?

The Robins are in action this evening with an away trip to Harrogate Town.

Flynn’s men drew 0-0 away at Port Vale in their last league outing on New Year’s Day and will be itching to return against the Sulphurites.
