'What does that leave?' – Pundits tout Wrexham as potential destination for Leeds United man

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has been touted for a move to Wrexham by the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast team.
Leeds United have seen Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph battle it out for the starting spot up top over the first half of the 2024/25 campaign.
There’s been much debate over who should have the starting berth in Daniel Farke’s side. However, a by-product of their tussle for starts has been a lack of game time for both Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt.
As a result, Gelhardt has been heavily linked with a winter exit, and further speculation over a departure for Bamford has been prompted by his decrease in minutes.
However, due to the big wages Bamford is on, some feel options may be few and far between for the Leeds United striker. That belief is prevalent among hosts of the BBC’s Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast, with Yorkshire reporters Jonny Buchan, Adam Pope and Simon Rix discussing Bamford’s potential destinations.
“Who could spend big money to get Patrick Bamford out of Leeds United?”, Pope asked, speaking on the latest edition of the show.
“It’s not going to happen in the Championship, I don’t think a Premier League club’s going to take a risk on him, so what does that leave elsewhere?”
To which Buchan responded:
“Well, it leaves big spenders in League One, where we know that they’re allowed to spend differently because of the way the regulations work at that level, and it leaves…”
“Wrexham,” said Rix.
Buchan finished by saying: “Well, there you go – Wrexham are a side that are in the mix in League One, and you wonder whether they might have a look.”
A tough situation
While a League One big spender like Wrexham or perhaps Birmingham City could be an avenue out of Leeds United for Bamford, it does feel as though those moves aren’t particularly feasible either.
They may have the money and perhaps a striker will be sought in the winter, but Bamford dropping down to League One seems unlikely. Premier League options will be hard to come by and Championship rivals may not be able to afford a move though, as was noted.
Maybe an overseas move offers Bamford the route back to regular game time he needs. If not, it could be that a supporting role at Elland Road awaits him again over the rest of the season.
One for the summer?
Bamford will enter the last year of his contract in the summer. Clubs will have more to spend at that time in the year too, so perhaps a summer 2025 move away from Leeds United awaits.
Then, the Whites don’t have to worry about persuading someone to take on a portion of his existing contract in a loan deal.
Perhaps a permanent agreement can be reached, bringing an end to Bamford’s memorable Leeds stay after seven years.
