Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Tranmere Rovers want relegated striker

Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Tranmere Rovers are keen on Forest Green Rovers striker Amadou Bakayoko, according to a report by Football Sierra Leone.

The Football League trio are all interested in signing the attacker this summer. He spent last season on loan at Dundee in the Scottish Premiership and scored six goals in 39 games in all competitions.

Bakayoko, 28, remains under contract at Forest Green Rovers for next term. However, his future with the Gloucestershire outfit is up in the air following their relegation to the National League along with Sutton United.

In this latest update regarding his situation by Football Sierra Leone, League One pair Charlton Athletic and Stockport County are ‘set’ to make an offer for him, along with Tranmere Rovers and Salford City in League Two.

It seems unlikely that he will stay at the New Lawn in non-league and it appears he isn’t short of potential suitors.

Who is this?

Bakayoko, who is a Sierra Leone international with 11 caps under his belt, started out at Walsall.

He went on to play 108 games for the Saddlers in his early career and scored 18 goals, as well as having loan spells away from the Midlands outfit at Southport, AFC Telford United and Worcester City in non-league to get some experience.

Coventry City landed him in 2018 and he helped them gain promotion to the Championship in his second year with the Sky Blues.

Bakayoko then left for Bolton Wanderers and fired 16 goals in 64 matches for the Trotters under Ian Evatt.

Forest Green Rovers came calling in 2022 but his move there hasn’t worked out. They have been relegated twice from the third tier to the National League.

He is due to return for pre-season following his loan at Dundee but his situation is up in the air.

Where next?

Charlton Athletic could see Bakayoko as someone to add more competition and depth to their options up top. Nathan Jones is preparing for his first full campaign in charge at The Valley and will be in the hunt for reinforcements.

Stockport County have seen a few players head out the exit door recently like Paddy Madden, Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Antoni Sarcevic and need to bring in some new faces following their promotion under Dave Challinor.

As for Tranmere Rovers, they ended last term in 16th place and Nigel Adkins is looking to bolster his ranks over the next couple of months.
