Arne Slot’s side took the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai after a mix-up in the Southampton backline, but the home side drew level from the penalty spot in what emerged as the biggest talking point from the first half.
Liverpool victims of a dubious penalty call
Southampton’s Tyler Dibling emerged as one of the best players on the pitch in the first half as he showed his ball-carrying ability and trickery.
With just a few minutes left for the first half to conclude, the youngster was clearly fouled by Andy Robertson as he tried to drive his way into the Liverpool penalty area.
The foul was clearly committed outside the penalty area, but referee Samuel Barrott awarded a penalty, much to Liverpool’s surprise.

And VAR didn’t intervene either as Michael Oliver somehow felt there wasn’t enough evidence that the foul was committed outside the penalty area.
Adam Armstrong missed the resulting spot-kick thanks to a fantastic save from Caoimhin Kelleher but he scored the re-bound to restore parity for his side.
Liverpool fans enraged by penalty decision
Liverpool fans took to social media to slam the standard of officiating in the Premier League as they were on the wrong end of a decision that could potentially cost them points in the title race.

@ConvertedCode_1 wrote: “How can that be a penalty again Liverpool? didn't we all see that was outside the box, at worst on the line. What is this madness of officiating?”
And finally, @surecr7 said: “This league is notorious for this madness.”
