Liverpool got the better of Bologna on Wednesday night as they made it two wins from two in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds have been in excellent form of late, winning four games in a row since September’s setback against Nottingham Forest.

And in an attempt to keep that run of form going, Arne Slot surprisingly went with an ultra-strength Liverpool XI against the Italian side.

Darwin Nunez came in after Diogo Jota suffered a knock at the weekend, but other than that, this was Slot’s first choice team.

So far, the Liverpool head coach has got the absolute most out of those players. And none more so than the three players in his midfield.

Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have had a top season individually and collectively so far. And on Wednesday, Slot sought them out early into the game.

Arne Slot spotted barking orders at midfield

Liverpool’s midfield have been heavily praised during the season so far, and rightly so.

The three players who began the win over Bologna have started all but one of the Reds’ games up to this point.

Slot clearly likes the way the trio work together and that was on show again at Anfield.

Mac Allister opened the scoring early into the game, while Ryan Gravenberch was ‘outstanding‘ once again beside him.

But even before Mac Allister’s goal from a sumptuous Mo Salah cross, The Athletic note that Slot was seen getting stuck into his midfielders.

They claim that the Dutchman was seen ‘asking his midfielders to raise the tempo’ during the early stages of the game.

They soon did that, with one of those on the receiving end of Slot’s orders poking home the crucial first goal.

Liverpool’s midfield works perfectly again

It was a bit of a surprise to see Slot pick the same three in midfield for this one. After a tired display at Wolves, it felt likely that Szoboszlai might drop out to be replaced by Curtis Jones.

But having gone from the start again, it will now be interesting to see what Slot decides to do for Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace.

In the meantime, Liverpool supporters will be basking in the glow of another accomplished performance from their midfield.

Gravenberch goes from strength to strength, while Mac Allister was excellent again and deserved his goal. Szoboszlai was also improved and justified his selection over Jones.

It’s still early days of course, but this midfield look capable of delivering Slot’s orders to a tee.
