Charlton Athletic snap up free agent following Brighton exit

Charlton Athletic have signed goalkeeper Tommy Reid following his exit from Brighton and Hove Albion, as confirmed by their official club website.

Charlton Athletic have landed the stopper on a free transfer and he will initially link up with their Under-21’s squad.

Reid, 19, has been on trial with the League One side over recent times and has done enough to earn a permanent move to The Valley now.

He will be looking to stamp his mark on the Addicks’ development squad now under the guidance of Chris Lock and has also made five appearances for them during his temporary spell, keeping three clean sheets.

Charlton Athletic could see him as someone who is capable of competing for their number one spot in the future. Will Mannion and Ashley Maynard-Brewer are their two senior options in that department at the moment as Nathan Jones’ side eye promotion to the Championship.

Reid had been on the books at Brighton for his whole career to date up until this summer.

The Seagulls made the tough decision to part company with him following the end of the last campaign.

His contract at the AMEX Stadium officially expired in late June and he has since been weighing up his options as a free agent.

Charlton Athletic invited him in for a trial and have now opted to land him permanently as they look to help him progress over the next couple of years.

Reid rose up through the academy ranks at Brighton and was a regular for the Premier League side at various different youth levels.

The England youth international never played for their first-team though and was loaned out to Burgess Hill Town and AFC Totton in non-league to get some experience under his belt.

What now?

Charlton Athletic will hope Reid can challenge for their goalkeeping position at some point down the line.

For now though, Mannion has become their first choice after joining in the summer after leaving fellow third tier outfit Cambridge United, with Maynard-Brewer as back-up.

The latter played last night as the London club won 2-1 away at Cambridge United in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. Tayo Edun and Matty Godden were on the scoresheet in the first-half, whilst Karoy Anderson got sent off near the end.

Charlton Athletic have made a decent start to this term under Nathan Jones and won 1-0 away at Shrewsbury Town last time out in the league with striker Gassan Ahadme scoring his first goal.

They are back in action this Saturday with a home clash against Blackpool as they look to keep their momentum going. Their upcoming opponents have turned to Steve Bruce as their new boss.
