Liverpool’s draw against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday put the spotlight once again on the Reds’ situation at left-back.

Arne Slot has seen the performances of Andy Robertson deteriorate this season, leading calls from fans for a new full-back to be signed.

After Robertson struggled against Forest, those calls will not abate any time soon.

Thankfully, Kostas Tsimikas was sent on with 25 minutes left and added some quality to proceedings with a brilliant assist for Diogo Jota.

But Tsimikas is clearly not the answer in the long-term, leading the Liverpool squad in desperate need of some fresh blood.

And according to reports in Italy, supporters’ could be about to get their wish as the Reds ready a move for Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu.

Liverpool advancing on Patrick Dorgu

The sight of Robertson struggling to replicate his best days at Liverpool has been a sorry one this season.

The 30-year-old is one of the best left-backs in Liverpool history and will rightly always be remembered as such. But right now, he is doing his reputation some harm.

As a result, Slot and the recruitment team need to rectify the problem. And as per Solo Lecce, they are now ready to firm up their interest in Dorgu.

The Italian outlet claim that a £34m bid for the 20-year-old is being prepared at Anfield.

Liverpool have reportedly watched Dorgu on four separate occasions recently, with the ‘top management’ of the Reds said to have been moved enough to put the deal into motion.

Napoli are also claimed to be pushing to sign the youngster, but the Naples-based club can reportedly only offer around £25m to Lecce.

Dorgu was urged not to join Liverpool

Dorgu has been linked with Liverpool since as far back as 2023. In the 18 months since, the Dane has become an important first-team player at Lecce.

As a result, perhaps his agent, Kingsley Ogbodo, was right to turn down interest from the Reds in the summer of 2023.

Speaking to Danish outlet Bold.dk in June of that year, Ogbodo said he had advised Dorgu not to join Liverpool out of fear he would not get any playing time.

“Liverpool want him. Liverpool have been watching him and interested in him for some time, but if he goes there, he will have to play for the U23 team,” he said. “It’s not the best thing for him, so I advise him not to do it.”

While Ogbodo may have been right, had Dorgu been onboard by now, he could have seamlessly taken over the spot which Robertson looks set to vacate. Late is always better than never, though, and perhaps Liverpool will get their man eventually.
