Liverpool’s draw against Manchester United on Sunday left a bad taste in the mouth for many supporters.

The Reds had been hoping – and expecting – to assert their dominance over their bitter rivals having opened up an astonishing 23-point gap in the Premier League.

However, well-drilled and much better than they have been of late, United came to spoil the party at Anfield.

In reality, a point was not the worst result in the end for Liverpool. It’s another tricky game ticked off as they aim for the Premier League title in 2025.

Nevertheless, the performance of Real Madrid target Trent Alexander-Arnold still really struck in the craw for many.

And as Alexander-Arnold got a mixed reception from the home crowd, it has been revealed that Arne Slot was not totally happy with what he was hearing from the supporters.

Arne Slot spotted defending Trent Alexander-Arnold

Slot was keen to protect Alexander-Arnold from the inevitable questions about his right-back after the game.

When Trent turns in a poor performance like this one defensively, the Liverpool fans are usually jumping to the defence of one of their own, too.

But after a tumultuous week in which Real Madrid tried to sign Alexander-Arnold, patience was running thin this time at Anfield.

And according to BBC Sport, the Liverpool academy graduate had a ‘significant proportion of the crowd on his back’ from the point he misplaced a pass early in the first-half of the game.

With that response seemingly getting worse as the game went on, they report that Slot could be seen ‘remonstrating’ with the crowd over the treatment of Alexander-Arnold.

It did not appear to work, with the testimony of one fan who was at the ground claiming that things were verging on ‘toxic’ towards Trent.

Alexander-Arnold the only one who can stop bad reaction

While this is never nice to hear, it should also be said that the reaction from the Liverpool fans here was completely understandable.

Alexander-Arnold’s position as Reds vice-captain was verging on untenable before the game, but after the performance he put in, it really is looking bleak now.

Roy Keane slammed Trent for his defending against United and he was far from the only one.

The 26-year-old’s body language was all wrong as he let United’s left-hand side run amock against him.

In reality, Slot can remonstrate all he wants, but Alexander-Arnold is the only one who can turn this around now, whether that’s through words or his performances on the pitch. Either way, something has to change because the tide is turning against him.
