According to a claim in the Swedish media, Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal is on the in verge signing for Groningen.

The 26-year-old was expected to leave Turf Moor in this transfer window and was linked with fellow Championship sides Queens Park Rangers and Middlesbrough.

Expressen have reported on the latest developments regarding Ekdal and they say he will soon travel to the Netherlands for his medical with Groningen.

It's claimed the Dutch side will loan the Burnley player until the end of the season, but with no option to purchase him in the summer.

The Swedish media outlet say QPR and Middlesbrough were in the race to sign Ekdal, but the Swede wasn't interested in signing for another Championship side.

It's claimed the central defender preferred a move to Groningen to get guaranteed games, rather than remain in England or head to Italy. There were reports of loan offers, with an option to purchase from other interested clubs.

Ekdal has made just one appearance for Burnley this season after finding himself frozen out by Scott Parker. He's contracted to the Lancashire side until June 2027.
