Burton starts: Wrexham team news and predicted XI to face Stockport County
11/15/2024 08:40 AM
Wrexham are one of few League One sides in action this weekend as they face Stockport County on Saturday afternoon.
Wrexham and Stockport County meet in League One on Saturday as the majority of their third-tier rivals enjoy a weekend off due to international call-ups.
The game means the Red Dragons have the chance to move back into the automatic promotion spots, even if it is only temporarily. Phil Parkinson’s side sit 3rd as it stands, two points behind Birmingham City having played a game more.
The North Welsh outfit were victorious in their last League One outing, beating Mansfield Town at the Racecourse. A rotated side took on Port Vale in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and was beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Wrexham face a Stockport County side coming into this one off the back of a thumping 5-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. Dave Challinor and co will be hoping that marks the start of an upturn in form after inconsistent results since their strong start.
Wrexham team news
Speaking earlier this week, Parkinson issued a full update on the Wrexham squad. Injuries have been a regular feature for them this season and the ranks are still somewhat depleted ahead of this weekend’s trip to Edgeley Park.
The major problem comes in goal, with number one Arthur Okonkwo facing a minimum of six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his wrist.
Luke Bolton and Will Boyle are also facing spells out. Though on the fringes of the squad, the Red Dragons duo will be out for up to five weeks, giving Parkinson even less depth.
Steven Fletcher has had a setback and will visit a specialist while James Jones remains out a couple of weeks away from returning to training. Jack Marriott has been back around the squad but is on a long road back from a broken leg.
George Evans is progressing well but it remains to be seen when he returns to contention.
Predicted XI
(3-5-2)
Burton; Cleworth, Scarr, O’Connor; Barnett, Cannon, Dobson, Lee, McClean; Mullin, Palmer.
As injuries continue to limit Wrexham’s selection, Parkinson will likely go for a very similar side to the one that defeated Mansfield Town in their last League One game.
The one change is a forced one in goal, with Okonkwo sidelined. Callum Burton may well be favoured in between the sticks after his success as Michael Cooper’s stand-in at Plymouth Argyle, but Mark Howard will be hoping for a chance too.
Dan Scarr may continue alongside Max Cleworth and Tom O’Connor at the back but Eoghan O’Connell is also an option in the back three.
A lack of depth limits options elsewhere but Jacob Mendy and Ollie Rathbone are among the other players who may be hoping for a chance in the starting XI.
