Birmingham City shouldn’t take their strong squad for granted this season, according to reporter Chris Dunlavy.

Birmingham City are eyeing an immediate promotion from League One and it was well documented over the summer how much money they spent in the transfer window.

The Blues are currently sat in 2nd place in the table behind Wycombe Wanderers. They are two points off the Chairboys with a game in-hand.

Journalist Dunlavy has written in The Football League Paper (17.11.24, pg. 7): “It is now six weeks since Birmingham’s Krystian Bielik bullishly announced that the Blues were too good for League One. ‘In six months time we’ll be a Championship team again,’ added the Polish international and, let’s face it, he’s probably right.

“But, for the moment, let’s just enjoy the fact that Birmingham are two points behind Wycombe Wanderers, a team whose entire squad cost significantly less then Blues’ £12m striker Jay Stansfield.

“Will the Chairboys stay at the summit of the division? Almost certainly not, especially if manager Matt Bloomfield is tempted away by Coventry. Nevertheless, it is a reminder that nothing in the EFL should ever be taken for granted, no matter how much you’ve spent – or how good you think you are.”

Birmingham City latest

Birmingham City delved into the market following their Championship relegation to bring in the likes of Jay Stansfield, Tomoki Iwata and Ryan Allsop, among others, to bolster their ranks.

They also cut ties with players such as Jordan James, Ivan Sunjic and John Ruddy to help free up space and funds in their ranks and pave the way for new arrivals.

The Blues have only lost once so far this term in the league which shows they are a tough nut to crack.

They have the quality to win the title at the first time of asking but they are under pressure in every game to get a win.

Chris Davies was brought in as their boss having previously worked in the coaching set-ups at Celtic, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

What next?

Birmingham City are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Shrewsbury Town as they look to return to winning ways.

They drew 1-1 at home to Northampton Town last time out before the international break.

The Blues looked on their way to securing another three points before the Cobblers equalised in added-on time through winger Mitch Pinnock.
