Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City were among the multiple sides scouting Crewe Alexandra vs Notts County at the weekend.

Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City all had a free weekend with international fixtures leaving another gap in the Championship fixture schedule.

The two-week break offers a valuable period of rest for second-tier sides ahead of the hectic winter schedule. However, it wasn’t a weekend off for all the EFL ladder, with many League Two sides still in action.

Among them were Crewe Alexandra and Notts County, who faced off at Gresty Road on Saturday. The Railwaymen emerged victorious, winning 2-0 against Stuart Maynard’s Magpies.

There were some interested viewers in the stands too. The Sunderland Echo has reported that the likes of Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, Swansea City, Stoke City, Wigan Athletic and even Premier League side Wolves had scouts in attendance.

It has not been said who was on the respective clubs’ radars, but here, we put forward a handful of star players who may well have been of interest on the day.

Who could have been on the radar?

Between Crewe Alexandra and Notts County are some valuable League Two assets. The Alex have a strong reputation for developing young players from their academy while the Magpies are bold with their recruitment and boast players who could arguably make a fairly significant jump up already.

Both profiles of player may well have interested in the likes of Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

From the hosts Crewe, young centre-back Zac Williams has emerged as a standout. He’s a valuable prospect as a left-footed, 20-year-old defender with Wales youth caps and 96 first-team appearances already to his name.

Ryan Cooney has been catching the eye at right wing-back too. The 24-year-old, who joined from Morecambe in 2023, has four goals and five assists to his name already this season.

Last but not least from the Alex, Max Conway has been catching the eye on loan away from Bolton Wanderers. He’s occupied the starting berth on the left-hand side for Lee Bell’s side this season.

For Notts County though, arguably their biggest assets were not in action.

They boast Dan Crowley in their ranks, who is arguably League Two’s best player. He’s affirmed that tag with his starring role this season but played no part due to injury. Alassana Jatta, who has scored 10 goals in 13 games to emerge as the Macaulay Langstaff replacement, was also absent.

As such, it’s tough to consider who Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and more could have had their eyes on. George Abbott played the full 90 as he continues to impress on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, while Alex Bass is amongst the division’s best goalkeepers.

Eyes on January

Perhaps time will tell just who the likes of Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, Hull City and more were eyeing over the weekend, but it’s clear that clubs have firm eyes on the transfer window.

This international break has offered a good chance for those without games to scout fixtures further down the leagues. It would not be a surprise if a host of other clubs were in attendance of League Two games for watching briefs of potential targets.

It remains to be seen whether these Championship sides look to raid League Two this winter though with clubs casting wide nets in their hunt for new stars.
