Birmingham City let Emmanuel Longelo head out the exit door on loan in the last transfer window.
Birmingham City gave the defender the green light to depart for a new challenge elsewhere to get some game time under his belt. His contract at St Andrew’s runs until June 2026 meaning he still has another couple of years left to run.
Longelo, 23, has been on the books of the Blues since joining them back in 2023. He has since made 45 appearances in all competitions, 20 of which came last season.
The Midlands outfit were relegated from the Championship along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town after finishing in the bottom three. They are now eyeing an immediate promotion back from League One under the guidance of Chris Davies.
Longelo linked up with fellow third tier side Cambridge United this past summer on a temporary basis. He now works with ex-Birmingham City boss Garry Monk.
How has Emmanuel Longelo fared?
It has been a tough start to the campaign for the U’s and they are currently in the drop zone along with Crawley Town, Burton Albion and Shrewsbury Town.
They have won three times so far this term and are three points from safety.
Longelo has enjoyed plenty of game time so far though for Cambridge United which is what he went there for.
He has made 10 appearances in all competitions so far, eight of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with two goals and two assists.
After moving to the Abbey Stadium in August, he told their club website: “I am really happy to be joining the Club. I am hungry to play, make a difference and show the Club and the fans what I can do.
“I have known about the Gaffer for a long time and I am excited about playing under him – I think we will work well together.”
The Londoner is due to return to Birmingham City next year and they will have a big decision to make regarding his long-term future.
Longelo faces a major battle to get into their starting XI ahead of Alex Cochrane and Lee Buchanan.
For now though, his focus will be on helping Cambridge United avoid relegation to League Two under Monk. They drew 1-1 at home to Barnsley over the weekend.
Story so far
He rose up through the academy ranks at West Ham and played twice for their first-team.
However, he left the London Stadium when Birmingham City came calling and he has been on the Blues’ books since then.
