Wrexham have had an excellent start to life in League One but could be facing a tough spell with some significant injury problems.
Wrexham look intent on continuing their rise through the leagues this season with Phil Parkinson’s side 3rd in the League One table after 14 games, just two points outside the automatic promotion spots.
They could not have dreamed of a much better start to life in the third tier, as only big spenders Birmingham City and flying Wycombe Wanderers are ahead of the Welsh side. They are currently unbeaten in five games but face a challenging game next up against fellow promoted side Stockport County.
The Hatters are in 6th place and despite inconsistency will be pleased with their own start. They are just one place ahead of another promoted side in Mansfield Town.
The weekend’s game between the two is sure to be an entertaining one, but Wrexham have some big injuries to worry about.
Wrexham injury latest
Wrexham have three new big concerns after their latest update, The most significant of which is to ‘keeper Arthur Okonkwo. The former Arsenal prospect has played all 14 games this season, keeping eight clean sheets along the way.
The 23-year-old damaged his wrist last weekend and after scans, it has been confirmed it is broken and will cast him to the sidelines for six weeks.
Backup ‘keepers Mark Howard and Callum Burton both played 45 minutes in the EFL Trophy in midweek.
The other two fresh injuries came against Port Vale in midweek. Both Luke Bolton and Will Boyle both picked up knocks and now face four-to-five weeks out, though neither player has made an appearance in the League so far this term.
Parkinson also had updates on George Evans, Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott. Evans is close to a return whereas Fletcher has had a setback and now will see a specialist in order to find out the damage.
As for Marriott, he remains a way off as he works back from a broken leg.
Who replaces Okonkwo?
As said before, both Burton and Howard featured in midweek as Parkinson looked at his keeping options.
Burton has been the backup so far this season, playing three times in the EFL Trophy and once in the EFL Cup, so he will be favoured to get the nod in goal for Wrexham with Okonkwo out for the foreseeable.
Should that be the case, it would be his first league appearance since the 2022/23 season, during which he played 17 times in League One for Plymouth Argyle as they were promoted to the Championship. At that time, he was covering for the injured Michael Cooper, so could make his return in similar circumstances.
